Classic Material: Junior Murvin – Police & Thieves

Junior Murvin – Police & Thieves

I grew up listening to classic joints such as this Junior Murvin song Police & Thieves. This song is so classic that The Clash remade it into a hit and British director Guy Ritchie featured the original Murvin version during a scene in his brilliant film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Although no official video exists to my knowledge, the video above is a gripping montage that does justice to Murvin’s social commentary. When I hear the lyrics “all the peacemakers turn war officers” it reminds me of the role the UN presently plays in many regions of the world. The lyrics and themes conjured up by this song are still very relevant in today’s society, leading me to believe that the socio-politcal world landscape has not changed much since it’s release in 1976, but songs with messages of truth however will always remain timeless.
